ABOUT

WE’RE CLAIRE & MATTHEW

We left Chicago for the lush Keweenaw Peninsula to pursue a healthful, sustainable, hardworking life dedicated to the land and our community.

Claire has always surrounded herself with and tended to plants. This symbiotic ritual started in early childhood with her own collection of houseplants on a sunny kitchen windowsill, many of which she still has to this day. She grew up cooking at home, which inspired her passion for creating delicious, wholesome foods. She holds a Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering and worked in the power industry in Research and Design. She has a patent for the invention of an electro-mechanical device used to sustainably harvest energy.

Matthew is fascinated by how tools and machinery work. He holds a PhD in Civil Engineering and does research and computation for our engineering firm North Fracture. In his free time he watches explanatory videos, listens to tech podcasts, and practices his photography. He loves farm-fresh foods and is quite the discerning food. His favorite dish is currently capellini with arrabbiata sauce and ground venison.

On the farm, Claire tends the soil, crops, and chickens while Matthew designs, builds, and maintains farm infrastructure like the garden fence, tractor, and greenhouse structure.

We’re passionate about sourcing sustainably, working diligently, and creating nourishing foods that support the well-being of our community. For us, it’s about more than just farming – it’s about contributing to a healthier, vibrant local food system and building meaningful connections with the people around us.

Thank you for being part of our story. We look forward to sharing the fruits of our labor with you!

OUR PRACTICES

We work in harmony with nature, using regenerative and organic practices. We nurture the soil, integrate livestock, grow diverse and resilient crops, and care for the land with long-term ecological balance in mind.

NATURALLY GROWN

  • Everything that goes into our garden is certified organic — seeds, soil, fertilizer, and amendments. Our inputs are all naturally derived: chicken compost, blood meal, bone meal, fish emulsion, and fermented inoculants rich in beneficial bacteria and fungi. None of that questionable synthetic stuff.

  • Healthy, balanced, living soil produces robust, nutritious crops — so soil health is always a priority. We let our beds rest, plant cover crops, and practice minimal tilling to protect the soil structure, minimize disturbance, and keep living roots in the ground as much as possible.

Our garden isn’t just about what we can harvest — it’s a reciprocal relationship with the land. We’re responsible for fostering rich biological activity and creating conditions where beneficial organisms like earthworms, mycorrhizal fungi, and pollinators can truly flourish.

  • We keep a flock of just under one-hundred chickens and compost their manure-rich bedding every year, returning those nutrients to the soil to help build fertility and sustain a healthy and productive garden.

We also accept food scraps through our Community Composting Program, turning would-be landfill waste into rich compost that nourishes our soil instead.

  • We carefully plan and rotate our crop plantings, intercrop, cover-crop, and companion plant to create a more resilient, diverse, and thriving garden ecosystem—from the microbes in the soil to the toads, salamanders, insects and birds who inhabit our garden.

  • We work in close relationship with our local community to best serve their needs, interests, and passions. We’re always listening, learning, and looking for ways to be more sustainable, supportive, and rooted in mutual care.

We farm and forage as many of our ingredients as possible right here on the land we call home. For what we don’t personally produce, we thoughtfully source from local and sustainable providers who share our commitment to quality and care, creating foods that are wholesome, honest, and deeply connected to our community and environment.

QUALITY INGREDIENTS

We believe everyone in our wonderful Keweenaw community should have access to fresh produce and lovingly handmade artisan foods, regardless of their ability to pay. At the farm stand, our frozen farm sourdough is always free to those who need.

We also partner with local food pantries and community organizations to share our foods with those in need.

FOOD ACCESS

Our chickens are fed an organic diet of wholesome feed, fermented mash, supportive herbs, nourishing supplements, sprouted wheatgrass, and nutritional grubs. Their nesting boxes are thoughtfully lined with hemp and supportive herbs to ensure their comfort and well-being.
